Nominet– the .uk naming authority – have launched a consultation on the .uk WHOIS.
The WHOIS is a database of all domain names in the .uk space which lists the legal registrant and other information including the address of the registrant, the domain name’s expiry date and nameservers.
Currently some users including non-trading individuals are allowed to redact some information – including their address – from the WHOIS, allowing Nominet to remain compliant with EU privacy legislation.
Nominet are consulting on whether it needs to clarify who is eligible to use these opt-outs.
It is also seeking feedback on a new proposed framework to ensure that registrars who offer privacy services in the .uk space that conceal personal details on the WHOIS still provide Nominet with accurate contact data.
Nominet are seeking feedback from a wide range of parties – from end users to registrars who provide WHOIS privacy services. The consultation will run until 3rd June 2015 and further details can be found at nominet.org.uk/WhoisConsultation.
As always, Demys will be representing our clients’ views in the consultation but if clients would like to discuss the issues in greater detail then please contact your usual account manager.
