New gTLD .shop launch

Demys are pleased to announce the launch of a new top level domain which we perceive to be one of the first to have widespread appeal and importance (as opposed to more typical niche interest) to most of our client base.

.shop will begin their Sunrise registration phase from 30 June until 29 August, during which trade mark holders with marks registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse will be able to register corresponding domain names.

While this new domain should be given serious consideration by any of our clients who provide an online shopping experience, and particularly as a defensive registration by those of our clients whose existing online shop operates under a relatively generic or non-distinctive name, the pricing set by the registry for an early application is significant. As always with a high priced domain, there is a trade-off to be made between the protection afforded by the earliest and highest priced application and the reducing cost of later applications.

We would urge all clients who have an interest in the new space to let us know if they wish to apply under any of the sunrise or other phases. Equally, more information on the TMCH is available here or by emailing
